The main non-direct and unofficial download locations are listed below. Alternative URLs are used only when an update can no longer be obtained directly from the Microsoft website. The updates listed here are downloaded from official Microsoft sources, unless stated otherwise. Problematic updates have a red exclamation mark icon for their links and are hidden by default. It is generally recommended to be careful when using them. Problematic updates are updates and hotfixes which are proven to cause issues after installation.Superseded updates are distinguished from other updates by a gray minus sign for their links and are hidden by default. They are listed here for those who prefer not to use hotfixes. The description for each superseded update has a link to the newer update that supersedes it. Superseded updates are those replaced by hotfixes from Microsoft.Unofficial updates have a purple wand icon for their links. They, generally, are either compilations of original Microsoft files, or modified files produced after studying fixes that MS provides for other Windows operating systems. Unofficial updates have been created and released by a few determined and generous independent developers (in particular MSFN and RyanVM members acus, BlackWingCat, MDGx, OnePiece, tomasz86 and WildBill).Server updates have a blue server rack icon for their links. They are not required for Windows 2000 Professional. Server updates are intended to be used in Server, Advanced Server and Datacenter Server editions of Windows 2000.Hotfixes have a green mail icon for their links. As such, some of these hotfixes may cause unforeseen problems for some users. For example, they did not undergo regression testing. Unlike updates on general release, they were not tested extensively. Hotfixes were produced by Microsoft to fix specific problems, and are issued on a per-request, optional basis via e-mail (they are not generally available like other updates). As well as the latest official updates on general release from Microsoft, the following types of updates are also listed here.
